Brian Waters, a Community Service major in college, knows the importance of life outside football. Brian served as a mentor to the Central High School football team in Kansas City as a part of the NFL Play It Smart program. He is also co-chairman for the Chiefs First Downs for Down Syndrome program which raises $200,000 annually based on the production of the Chiefs offensive line. Plus Brian is a volunteer at Genesis School, an alternative school in Kansas City. In 2004 Brian Waters started his own charitable foundation, "The Brian Waters Foundation" which helps inner city youth in both the Kansas City and Dallas areas. The Brian Waters Foundation is a member of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation.

The Play It Smart program, created in 1998 by The National Football Foundation, is an educational program targeted at children from tough inner city environments where family and community support are generally lacking. The Play It Smart program was designed to take a student-athlete’s passion for sport and dedication to their team and transform it into a force for greater good in their lives. The program has exceeded everybody’s expectations. At less than a dollar a day per student-athlete, the program has sent 87% of its participants onto college.

The mission of First Downs for Down Syndrome is to raise money for the Down Syndrome Guild, the Down Syndrome Clinic at Children's Mercy Hospital, and other Down Syndrome organizations in the Kansas City area; to raise awareness of Down syndrome and the services of the Clinic and the Guild; and to create positive images of those with Down syndrome.

Brian assists Casey Wiegmann as the Offensive Line Representatives for First Downs for Down Syndrome. As representatives, they speak on behalf of FDFDS and the O-line, they attend all fundraising events and promote the events and organization through TV, radio and other media.
